Education & Outreach

The Household Cavalry Museum is a living Museum in the heart of Royal London – Horse Guards. We offer a unique behind the scenes look into the daily life of a working soldier in the regiment.

Our new schools & families programme is full of fun curriculum focused workshops.

You will look at the dual role of the regiment – ceremonial and combat.
You will discover the secrets and stories of the Queen’s Life Guard, who have guarded the Sovereign for over 350 years.
You will learn more about the armoured reconnaissance role.
You will try on genuine uniform of the Household Cavalry.
You will have a worthwhile experience learning outside the classroom.

This regiment is the ‘best of both worlds’.

The visit to the museum is complimented by colourful sentry changes throughout the day so your visit will always include viewing the spectacular ceremonial guard duties which show unique British pageantry at its best.

Schools

Our school sessions are for groups of up to 25 or 30 pupils. We offer a 2hr workshop made up of a carousel of activities

Families

Families are welcome to come, explore and experience our Museum & learn about the Household Cavalry.

Fantastic new venture with Gresham Books

Fantastic new venture with Gresham Books

We’re thrilled to announce, hot off the press, our new book with Gresham Publishing. “Trusted Guardians” helps pupils explore Fundamental British Values in a fun and engaging way, and the (pending) accompanying classroom poster also helps teachers demonstrate the classes progress throughout the term. End the term with a visit to the museum to really bring the fun to life.

Living History with Westminster Archive Centre

Three fascinated Westminster school groups got to ‘meet’ Waterloo hero Samuel Godley in the Household Cavalry Stables last week; he told them about his experiences in the great battle and also answered interview questions. The groups were also able to meet serving members of the regiment to compare regimental life 200 years ago to today. Much fun was had by all.

Would you like your school to take part in this style of visit?

Important notice, If you are planning a trip to London in September:

Please note that between 2-24 September 2024, some of the King’s Life Guard Ceremonial duties will change.

There will be no horses at Horse Guards or 1100hrs Mounted Guard Change during this time.

The soldiers will change from Mounted Review Order to Dismounted Review Order. Dismounted soldiers will still be seen daily in the Tilt Yard between 1000hrs and 1600hrs, with a dismounted Guard change ceremony taking place at 1100hrs and the traditional 1600 hrs parade. This is to allow essential infrastructure maintenance to take place.

The public will also continue to see the dismounted soldiers on duty at Horse Guards on a daily basis during this time.

This does mean that there will be no horses to see through our glass viewing window in the museum during this period but the museum will remain open.
