“It is the best regimental history I have ever read”
Sir Winston Churchill
The official World War II history of 2nd Household Cavalry Regiment (2HCR) by Roden Orde
We are delighted to announce the republication of the official World War II history of the 2nd Household Cavalry Regiment (2HCR) by Roden Orde.
The new edition is authentic to the original published in 1953, and has been made possible by the generous contributions of former and serving Household Cavalrymen, their families, and the Household Cavalry Foundation.
The book is a real gem and a clear cut above most regimental histories, colourfully telling a story which captures the tremendous courage, spirit and humour of all ranks who served in 2HCR.
When the author sent a copy to the Prime Minister in 1953, he received the reply:
“It is the best regimental history I have ever read”
Sir Winston Churchill
2HCR’s war was a short and exciting one, from Normandy in July 1944, to Germany in May 1945. As an armoured reconnaissance regiment in the vanguard of the Guards Armoured Division it helped lead the advance probing miles behind the enemy’s front, constantly ‘looping’ around strongpoints to find ways for the main thrust to break through. They were the first troops to reach Brussels and to link up with 1st Airborne Division at Arnhem.
Unlike other regimental histories, it is not just an account written about and for officers, but rather a book about an entire regiment full of anecdotes from all ranks, in a narrative style and with a contemporary feel.
The book is copiously illustrated with many photographs, hand-drawn maps (many in colour and by Stanfords), as well as wonderful contemporary paintings and drawings, not seen for many years.
Published by Pen & Sword, this new edition includes an additional Foreword by Lt Gen Sir Barney White-Spunner, along with the Foreword to the first edition by Lt Gen Sir Brian Horrocks.
The proceeds of all books sales, net of distribution costs, will go towards the Household Cavalry Foundation.
